If you’re wondering where to go and what to do in Slovakia, we’ll lead the way from wandering the pretty Old Town to finding treasures in the local markets.
Ever wanted to see a UFO? We'll take you to the famous UFO bridge, where a flying saucer sits on top of the bridge's only pylon, with an observation deck and restaurant inside. It's got to be the most photographed bridge in Slovakia, and you can even snap some stunning shots of Bratislava from the bridge, with views of Bratislava Castle and the city.
Slovakia has a rich history just waiting to be explored, starting with a day of Bratislava sightseeing in the UNESCO-listed Old Town. Walk through the 14th-century Michael's Gate, wander along the ancient cobbled lanes, see the pretty pink facades of the Primate's Palace where many treaties have been signed, and get a taste of local life at the Old Market Hall.
The beautiful blend of historic architecture is one of the best things to see in Bratislava. Marvel at the Gothic-style St Martin's Cathedral topped with a 300-kilogram replica of the royal crown, the charming Art Nouveau-style Blue Church, and the 13th-century Old Town Hall built with a fusion of styles including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Tailor your Slovakia trip your way with our range of Choice Experiences. Choose from adventures like seeing the famous Blue Church and exploring the historic Freedom Square.

We were looking for the best views over Slovakia and found them at Bratislava Castle, perched on a hilltop over the city. We got spectacular scenes of the Danube River and you can even see Austria and Hungary on clear days. The castle itself is also gorgeous and you can’t miss checking out the huge white fortress with the red roofs and four corner towers.

This whimsical Art Nouveau church is just east of the old town on Bezručova Street. The architect in charge was Ödön Lechner, a pioneer of Hungarian Secessionism and often referred to as the Hungarian Gaudí. Outside, the church has a Disney-esque blend of Romanesque, Baroque and Oriental design in its painted white and pale blue and roofed with glazed blue tiles. Inside, the pews are especially pretty, painted blue with gold patterns. Beautiful!

When in Bratislava, be sure to go for a walk around Freedom Square, one of the prettiest green spots and home to the city's largest fountain. The square was designed in the 1980s, and the surrounding Soviet-style buildings were created during Slovakia's communist era. It's also the place where Slovak inventor Ján Bahýľ took off in 1897 in the world's first helicopter!
After working up an appetite with all the Slovakia sightseeing, there’s nothing better than tucking into a steaming plate of boiled potato dumplings. Topped with a tangy yet creamy bryndza sheep cheese and chunks of fried bacon, this is one of Slovakia’s most beloved national dishes.
Sheep’s cheese is an all-time favourite for Slovakians. Whether you like soft cheese, hard cheese, string cheese, steamed cheese or crumbled cheese, you can find it all in Slovakia. From salty to sour to smoky to mild, paired with wine, meats, pastries or fruits, there are endless kinds of delicious sheep’s cheese to try.
You’re sure to fall head over heels for lokše, Slovakia’s tasty answer to pancakes. These thin potato flatbreads are made with soft potato dough, baked until crispy and golden, then packed with all kinds of fillings like meat and sauerkraut. If you like it sweet, smother them in fruit jam and melted butter. Heavenly!
There’s something to see in every season in Slovakia, from blooming mountains in spring to harvest festivals in autumn.
The best time to cruise the beautiful Danube River is from April to October when the weather is fine, as the water usually freezes over in winter!
The countryside of Slovakia is at its best from mid-June to October, when walking trails open, the flowers are blooming, and the weather is milder.
We love a Slovakia city break all year round. Visit in summer for warm (and rainy) days, spring and autumn for fun Slovak festivals, and winter for snowy magic.
You can help reduce plastic waste in Slovakia by bringing your own reusable bags and refillable water bottles that you can take home.
Before you hop in a taxi, think about taking public transport on your Bratislava trip. It’s cheaper, greener and fun too.
Slovakia has some gorgeous mountains and walking trails, but always remember to take all your rubbish and stay on the marked paths.
