There is really nothing that can bring Ancient Egypt to life like seeing Egypt for yourself. Tick off the quintessential bucket list items in Cairo before sailing south in between the contrasts of the Sahara against the lush greenery either side of the Nile to witness some of the most incredible ancient sites and hieroglyphs in Edfu and Luxor. If you can spare the time Abu Simbel is a must-see - the last remaining colossal carvings for Rameses II and his devotion to his Queen Nefertari will blow your mind.

The world’s longest river and its extraordinary monuments, the stunningly fertile valley and the barren beauty of the surrounding desert, the light and heat, and the joy of slow travel in a superfast world all add up to one of the highlights of a trip to Egypt. Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is a pretty pink building, home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. If you want to immerse yourself even more in Egyptian culture, I always try to learn a few local words and phrases as it really makes travelling easier. Start with 'Salām alaykum' - that’s 'hello' in Egyptian Arabic!
You’ll be eating like the ancient Egyptians when you bite into ful medames, a classic breakfast dish made from fava beans. These tasty beans can be prepared in dozens of different ways, like topping it with lemon juice, butter, olive oil, sausage, cheese and fried eggs, or wrapping them up in a fluffy pita bread. Delicious!
If you’re after some Egyptian street food, look no further than Kushari, a beloved dish made from macaroni, rice, chickpeas and black lentils smothered in tomato sauce and fried onions. It’s a total carb-fest and one of Egypt’s best comfort foods. Top it off with a dash of chilli sauce, garlic vinegar or crispy onions.
When we think of falafel we think big flavour, and the Egyptians have put an extra tasty twist on this world favourite. Ta’meya (Egyptian falafel) is made with crushed fava beans mixed with chickpea flour, leek, garlic, onion and all kinds of herbs and spices like parsley, paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper. Wrap it in a pita, top it with tahini and you’re set!
Our preferred seasons in Egypt are spring and autumn with milder weather that’s perfect for long days filled with adventure.
The best time to go on a Nile river cruise is between October and May, when the weather is cooler, as the summer season gets baking hot.
It’s best to explore the ancient sites in autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) for better weather and fewer crowds.
We love heading to the beaches in Egypt anywhere from March until November, as these are the best months for snorkelling and spotting dolphins.
The state religion of Egypt is Islam, so you’ll need to be respectful of customs like dressing modestly, not being intimate in public and not drinking in public.
Egypt suffers from a severe water shortage so make sure you use water sparingly, with shorter showers, turning taps off tightly and using towels and sheets more than once.
Sea turtles are precious residents of the Red Sea and you can help keep them safe in nesting season by giving them plenty of room and never using flash photography.
