Often cited as Amsterdam’s most charming neighborhood, wandering into the Jordaan feels like stepping back in time. Originally a working-class area, the Jordaan’s narrow streets and quaint buildings now make up one of Amsterdam’s most desirable quarters, dotted with independent art galleries, antique shops, courtyard gardens and atmospheric bars and restaurants. Ditch the map and lose yourself in the labyrinth of narrow lanes.

It doesn’t matter if it’s simmering hot or wintery cold, whenever the sun is out in Amsterdam the locals head to the first terrace or park they can find to soak up some vitamin D, and you should too! The most popular park in Amsterdam is the Vondelpark, located right in the heart of Amsterdam. ‘T Blauwe Theehuisje is an icon amongst locals and the perfect spot to relax with a cold beer or a cup of hot chocolate after your stroll.
No one eats herring like the Dutch and you’ll quickly get to know the Dutch way of eating maatjesharing, or soused herring. The fish is lightly salted, mildly brined but never cooked by heat. To do it like the locals do, hold the fish by the tail high in the air, then tilt your head back and eat the whole tasty lot in one go.
If you’re on the hunt for dessert, the Netherlands is the place to be. One of our favorite treats is the stroopwafel, a sweet waffle made from two thin layers of baked dough. Once you bite in, you’ll find a heavenly dollop of caramel syrup in the middle. Buy them fresh from the market or take a few home… we’re sure you won’t stop at one.
These delicious deep-fried balls are made from meat roux cooked in a rich beef stock of onion, nutmeg, salt and pepper. They’re crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside and best washed down with a beer at a local cafe. Do as the locals do and dip them in the classic tangy mustard, but be warned - they’re highly addictive.
The Netherlands is a dream all year round. From the colourful tulip fields of spring to the cities in a summer glow, the Netherlands is the place to be 365 days a year.
If you want to see pretty tulip fields at their blooming best, you’ll need to visit the Netherlands in spring between March and May.
We love the Netherland’s cities all year round. See Amsterdam in a magic blanket of snow in winter, or experience the golden autumns and lovely summers.
The Netherlands is famed. for its superb museums and while they’re open year round, the best time to visit is in the winter or autumn, with fewer crowds and shorter queues.
Overtourism is a big problem in Amsterdam and you can help by exploring the lesser-visited countryside rather than just the popular Museum Quarter and Red Light District.
Dutch food is best enjoyed the local way, and you’ll get to learn the real stories behind all the cheese, pancakes and beer when you eat local in the Netherlands.
With more bicycles than any other country, cycling is serious business in the Netherlands. Make sure you avoid walking in the bike lines and keep to the pedestrian paths to stay safe.
