Scandinavia is steeped in history yet with a welcoming and cosmopolitan vibe. Visiting the Vasa museum was incredible, where there is a fully restored 17th-century ship in all its glory. By night, venture into the city and head to the original ice hotel where you can bundle up and admire the ice carvings all lit up while sipping a cocktail from a frozen glass.

Learn a little about the history, which dates back to Viking times and present-day traditions. Known as köttbullar in Sweden and kjøttboller in Norway, you'll find these succulent meatballs all across Scandinavia. Made from spiced minced beef or pork and served with potatoes, peas, brown cream gravy, lingonberry jam or pressed cucumbers depending where you are, no matter how they're dished up, they’re sure to be irresistible.
The most beloved Scandinavian sandwich is the smørrebrød from Denmark. The name literally means ‘butter and bread’ and this classic open sandwich is made with dense rye bread piled high with a variety of toppings from cold cuts to pickled herrings. Expect the smørrebrød to quickly become part of your daily routine.
You won’t have to go far to get a glass of glögg. This mulled wine treat can be found all over Scandinavia, although you’ll find different recipes throughout the region. It’s typically made with vodka, red wine, spices like cinnamon and ginger, with a handful of raisins and almonds at the bottom of the glass. You’ll soon be saying skål!
Scandinavia shines in summer with warmer weather, but winter offers its own treasures with glittery snow and the famous Northern Lights.
The winter season from December to February is the best time of year to try and catch the elusive Northern Lights in Norway and Sweden - just remember to wrap up warm!
