Why is it important to be sustainable while travelling?

There's nothing like the world we live in. It's lovely, right? That's why we love to travel, after all! And if the world's so great, shouldn't we make sure we leave it the way we found it, or make it even better? Travel has a footprint, let's make sure it's a positive one.

You could try and minimise waste, pack a reusable water bottle, only buy what you need, and spend your money with local artisans and independent businesses. Sometimes it's hard to know where to go, which is why having a Local Expert at hand like you do on a Costsaver tour is so great. You'll know that your money is going to the right places to support the local community.

What are sustainable experiences?

A sustainable experience is anything that helps support the environment or the community. For example, you could spend your money on local businesses and suppliers, hold off on the single-use plastics, or do something that helps protect wildlife, like learning about conservation efforts in an animal sanctuary. It's real easy on a Costsaver tour, just choose a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, which are all assessed to ensure that they leave the world in a better place.

What is the most sustainable form of travel?

We may be biased, but coach really is the most sustainable form of travel (outside of walking or cycling). It's got the lowest carbon footprint per passenger, especially our Euro 6 coaches which are the most efficient of their kind. Plus, you can really jazz them up with things like solar panels to make them even more sustainable. Yeah, we've done that too.

What does sustainability mean in everyday life?

It's good to try and be sustainable in your everyday life, even when you're not travelling. You'll see that the small actions we take have ecological, social and economic consequences on the Earth. Being sustainable in everyday life is to be mindful of these consequences, and incorporate sustainability in everything you do.

What are examples of our climate action?

We're committed to taking climate action to address carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Some examples of this are:
  1. We’ve created an internal Carbon Fund, pooling revenue from Costsaver and our sister brands to fund big, bold initiatives that will reduce our carbon footprint, and our journey towards net zero.
  2. Set clear science-based targets that have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
  3. Partnered with Trees For Life, who work to rebuild the Scottish Highlands. We support their Wild Pine project, which is restoring Scotland's Caledonian Forest and its unique wildlife.
  4. Joined forces with Project Vesta, who are working to harness the power of the ocean to remove a trillion tonnes of excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
