No Bali trip is complete without a stop at the magical rice terraces of Tegallalang in Ubud. While there’s no shortage of gorgeous rice fields to see in Indonesia, Tegallalang really takes the cake. We went to Ubud Market where we chose the freshest herbs, fruits, vegetables and spices, then headed back to the kitchen where the chef let us in on all the tips and tricks to whip up our favourite Balinese dishes. The best part? Eating it all, of course!

I admired so many batik paintings in the market so it was fantastic to learn about the batik process and take home such a special memento. We also visited a leather puppet maker and learnt about Wayang Kulit, a traditional puppet theatre considered to be one of the highest artforms in Javanese culture.

All my eighties fantasies became a reality in Bali! We went full retro when we spent the afternoon touring Denpasar city and the coastline in a vintage VW kombi. I couldn't think of a better way to hit the Bali road and see all the beautiful sights!
If you love fried rice, you’ll adore Nasi Goreng, Indonesia’s answer to this famous dish. It’s made extra delicious in Indonesia with a dash of kecap manis, a sweet soy sauce that caramelises the rice when it cooks. Top it with a fried egg, and you’ve got one of the world’s greatest comfort foods.

Bali is wonderful all year round, and we especially love the dry season from May to September when there is little rain and lots of sun.
Our favourite time to visit Java is from May to October when there is less rain, lower humidity and warm temperatures in the low 30°Cs.
The rice terraces are gorgeous all year round, but If you want to see them at their greenest, it’s best to visit before the rice is harvested, between March and April, September and October, or December and January.
Waste disposal is a huge problem for Indonesia and you can help out by using refillable bottles and bags to use throughout your trip.
Indonesia is a largely conservative country and it’s important to respect the culture by leaving the swimsuit at the beach, and covering your knees and shoulders at religious sites.
In Indonesia, it’s considered impolite to point with your finger, pass or accept things with your left hand, or touch people on the head as this is a sacred part of the body.
